Paul Johnson Guide Service LLC offers expert-guided bass fishing trips on Lake Chickamauga and Nickajack lake, ensuring an unforgettable fishing experience tailored to both novice and experienced anglers. With over 20 years fishing expertise, Captain Paul Johnson, a lifetime Chattanooga local, utilizes profound knowledge of both lake Chickamauga and Nickajack lake to guide clients towards the most productive fishing spots. My fishing charter promises not only the thrill of fishing but also education on techniques you can use to help you become a better bass fisherman. Services offered include half day (4 hours), full day (8 hours), and also a forward facing sonar master class where I will teach my clients the ins and outs of forward facing sonar.
Through the years I have won multiple angler of the year titles fishing local bass fishing clubs. A few years back I was able to win a boat against a 300 boat field fishing an ABA tournament on lake Guntersville. I currently fish the Chattanooga Bass Association against some of the best fishermen on Chickamauga lake. After the fifth tournament of the year in May 2024, I am currently second in the yearly points.
In my photo album you can see pictures of two of the biggest bags ever weighed in on Nickajack lake. One was a 27 pound bag and the other I caught during a GNC tournament this year (2024) which was over 28 pounds. Also below is the weigh in video of the 28 pound bag on Nickajack lake. Chickamauga lake is located on the Tennessee River and was created in 1940 by the Tennessee Valley Authority by building the Chickamauga dam. It is a large, intimidating lake at over 36,000 acres and 800 miles of shoreline. The major cities on the lake include Chattanooga on the lower end of the lake and Dayton on the upper end of the lake. In 2000 the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency began stocking Florida strain largemouth in the reservoir. The current state record for Tennessee was caught on Chickamauga lake weighing 15lbs 3oz!
On a guided bass fishing trip with Paul Johnson Guide Service LLC we target largemouth bass but commonly catch other species including spotted bass and smallmouth bass. The lake has many different patterns and techniqes to fish depending on the time of year. There are river channel ledges, shell beds, submerged vegetation, brush piles and much more. Depending on the time of the year the techniques I commonly use to catch the largemouth bass include jigs, texas rigs, Carolina rigs, Neko rigs, Alabama rigs, drop shots, jig head minnows, chatter baits, and much more. I commonly use Garmin live scope to make sure we stay on the fish and keep the baits in the strike zone.
Nickajack lake was created in 1967 when TVA built the Nickajack Dam. Nickajack lake is smaller than Chickamauga lake at only 10,370 acres and 192 miles of shoreline. Chattanooga is the major city on the upper end of the lake while Jasper is on the lower end. While navigating from Chattanooga to Jasper you pass through the Tennesse River gorge which is also know as the "Grand Canyon of Tennessee". Nickajack lake also has Nickajack cave which is home to thousands of grey bats which fill the sky at sunset. This cave was used by both Native Americans and civil war soldiers. Don't let the small size fool you. This lake is a hidden gem! With the combination of Florida strain largemouth and eel grass taking over as the major vegetation in the lake, it is primed to explode with a large population of giant largemouth bass in the very near future. I would not be surprised to see the Tennessee state record largemouth bass be challenged in the next few years by this little honey hole.
On a guided bass fishing trip with Paul Johnson Guide Service LLC we will likely target the submerged aquatic vegetation to catch the largemouth bass. Nickajack lake also has productive shell beds, stumps, and road beds that produce giants. Depending on the season we could be fishing with anything from a chatterbait or Alabama rig to a deep diving crankbait. At certain times of the year throwing a top water frog can create some real excitement. There is nothing like watching a giant largemouth bass explode through the grass mat to eat a frog! Nickajack lake is where I cut my teeth bass fishing and usually I am considered one of the favorites to win any tournament I enter on the lake.
